What is Composite Bonding?
Composite bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure that can transform your smile by repairing damaged or discoloured teeth. Composite bonding, also known as edge bonding, is a composite resin, that's moulded and shaped to your teeth, restoring the natural shape and appearance. If you're looking for a quick and affordable way to improve your smile, composite bonding may be the solution you've been looking for.
The colour of the resin is matched to your teeth, appearing as a natural part of the tooth. A course of whitening on your natural teeth is usually offered several weeks before the procedure to ensure the patient obtains the desired shade of white. When composite bonding is performed, the resin is hardened and set using a blue curing light, reworking the teeth to the desired shape. The process is also completely pain-free and no filing of the tooth is required beforehand.
What Does Composite Bonding do?
For most patients, composite bonding is used to fix personal imperfections such as chipped or cracked teeth, gaps, discolouration or irregular shape. A lot of people get this procedure to correct the shape of their teeth, in which case, edge bonding would usually be carried out.
A full composite makeover can be done to complete a full smile, working on up to 12 teeth. Bonding can create a variety of smiles, ranging from a more natural look to a pearly white, doll-like smile. In cases of receding gums, composite resin helps to cover exposed teeth roots and prevents any sensitivity and further damage. How Long Does Composite Bonding Last?

Bonding requires no downtime, so you will be able to resume all normal activities as soon as you leave the clinic! As bonding doesn’t provoke any risks to your oral health, the procedure is completely safe if you have healthy teeth and gums. Since bonding doesn’t require any removal of the enamel, it can be reversed at any time. You should expect your composite bonding to last between 4 and 8 years, as the material is not as strong as your natural teeth. The durability is less than crown or porcelain veneers, but the procedure is much quicker and easier to replace in the future.
Like any cosmetic procedure, composite and edge bonding have precautions and risks that come along with it. For example, you may experience discolouration when pigmented food and drinks are consumed.
